Erläuterungen zum Harmonisierten System (HS) Vanille ist die sehr aromatische und schwärzliche Frucht (Schote) einer zur Familie der Orchideengewächse gehörenden Kletterpflanze. Neben der langen und der kurzen Vanille gibt es noch eine sehr geringwertige Art (Vanilla pompona), die als Vanillon bezeichnet wird und weich, fast klebrig und immer offen ist. Zu dieser Position gehören nicht: a) Vanille-Oleoresin (manchmal unzutreffend als „Vanille-Resinoid“ oder als „Vanille-Extrakt“ bezeichnet (Position 1302). b) Vanillezucker (Position 1701 oder 1702) c) Vanillin (der Aromagrundstoff der Vanille) (Position 2912).
