Erläuterungen zur Kombinierten Nomenklatur (KN) Braunkohle brennt mit langer Flamme, wenig heiß, mit schwarzem Rauch von unangenehmen Geruch. Man unterscheidet gemeinhin: faserhaltige Braunkohle, die im Aussehen durch ihren faserigen Bruch an das ursprüngliche Holz erinnert, mit sehr hohem Gehalt an Feuchtigkeit (bis zu 50 GHT), gewöhnliche oder erdfarbene Braunkohle, braun oder schwarz, die weniger Wasser enthält (ungefähr 15 GHT), mit erdigem Bruch, bitumenhaltige und fette Braunkohle, die unter Einwirkung von Hitze weich wird, wodurch sie leicht zu brikettieren ist, wachshaltige Braunkohle, mit wächsernem Bruch, mit hohem Gehalt an Wachs. Nicht hierher gehört der nach spanischer Handelsnorm bezeichnete „schwarze Lignit“ der Förderreviere Teruel, Mequinenza, Pirenaica und Baleares (Position 2701).
