Es ist ein unter Druck leicht zu verflüssigendes und in Wasser sehr leicht lösliches Gas. Es wird unter Druck in flüssiger Form in Stahlflaschen aufbewahrt. Es kommt auch in Form konzentrierter Lösungen (üblicherweise 28–38 %) (Salzsäure, Chlorwasserstoffsäure) in Glas- oder Steinzeugbehältern oder in mit Kautschuk ausgekleideten Tankwaggons oder Tankfahrzeugen in den Handel.
