Der Zinkdampf wird durch Verdampfen von metallischem Zink (indirektes oder französisches Verfahren) oder durch Reduktion von oxidischen Zinkrohmaterialien, wie Zinkerzen (geröstete Zinkblende, Calamin - Position 2608), mit Kohlenstoff (direktes oder amerikanisches Verfahren) erhalten. In diesen Verfahren wird das Oxid in Filteranlagen oder Staubkammern gesammelt und bildet dabei Ablagerungen von zunehmend reineren Oxiden. Im nasschemischen Fällungsprozess, wird Zink aus zinkhaltigen Rohmaterialien ausge­waschen und dann als Zinkhydroxid oder Zinkcarbonat ausgefällt.
