Erläuterungen zum Harmonisierten System (HS) Natron- und Sulfatzellstoffe werden durch Kochen von Holz, gewöhnlich in Form von Schnitzeln, in stark alkalischen Lösungen gewonnen. Bei Natronzellstoff besteht die Aufschlussflüssigkeit aus einer Ätznatronlösung (Natriumhydroxid); bei Sulfatzellstoff wird eine modifizierte Ätznatronlösung verwendet. Die Bezeichnung „Sulfatverfahren“ wird verwendet, weil Natriumsulfat, von welchem ein Teil zu Natriumsulfid umgewandelt wurde, bei der Herstellung der Aufschlussflüssigkeit zu einem bestimmten Zeitpunkt zugegeben wird. Sulfatzellstoff ist heute bei weitem bedeutender. Halbstoffe, die durch diese Verfahren hergestellt worden sind, werden sowohl zur Herstellung saugfähiger Erzeugnisse (wie Kissen und Windeln) als auch für Papiere und Pappen verwendet, die eine hohe Bruchdehnung und Berstfestigkeit sowie einen hohen Durchreißwiderstand erfordern.
