Zu seiner Herstellung werden die Rohstoffe in einem Schmelzofen geschmolzen. Die geschmolzene Glasmasse wird, nachdem es den Schmelzofen verlassen hat, auf ein „floatbad“ aus geschmolzenem Metall gegossen.
