Zur Beseitigung ihrer Verunreinigungen (stickstoff-, arsen- oder selenhaltige Verbindungen, Bleisulfat) behandelt man sie mit Schwefelwasserstoff oder Ammoniumsulfid. Schwefelsäure ist eine sehr stark korrodierende Flüssigkeit. Sie ist von hoher Dichte, ölig, farblos (wenn sie keine Verunreinigungen enthält) oder gelb bzw. braun (im umgekehrten Falle). Sie reagiert heftig bei der Berührung mit Wasser und zerstört die Haut und die meisten organischen Stoffe, indem sie dieselben verkohlt.
