Blei oder Cerussit (Bleicarbonat), durch Erhitzen unter Luftzutritt oxidiert, bildet zuerst ungeschmolzenes Bleioxid oder Massicot in Form eines blassgelben Pulvers und danach, wenn die Temperatur dunkle Rotglut überschritten hat, das geschmolzene Oxid in Form von orangegelbem oder rötlichem Pulver oder Schuppen. Die Bezeichnung „Lithargyrum“ (Bleiglätte) umfasst beide genannten Erzeugnisse, sie wird jedoch häufiger für das letztgenannte verwendet. Man erhält sie auch als Nebenerzeugnisse bei der Extraktion von Silber aus silberhaltigem Blei.
