Papiergarn wird aus gewöhnlichen Papierstofffasern, namentlich Holzzellstoff, dadurch hergestellt, dass die auf der Lang- oder Zylinderformmaschine erzeugte Papierbahn durch streifenweise Herstellung des Metalltuches oder durch dünne Wasserstrahlen in Streifen geteilt, diese durch einen Filz abgenommen und einem Nitschelzeug zugeführt werden, wodurch die Umwandlung aus flachen Streifen in „rundes“ Garn erreicht wird. Die so entstandenen oder manchmal auch aus geschnittenen Streifen schon fertigen Papiers hergestellten Garne können mit einer Appretur versehen sein. Ein Papiergarn im Sinne des Abschnitt XI muss mindestens 10 Drehungen je laufenden Meter in Längsrichtung aufweisen.
