Materiale granulare irregolare, con dimensione dei granuli di pochi millimetri. Il prodotto è un semilavorato vetroso (fritta ceramica) ottenuto in particolari forni fusori continui, tramite il brusco raffreddamento in acqua di una massa fusa più o meno viscosa, derivante dalla miscelazione e fusione a temperature superiori ai 1300°C, di differenti componenti ordinari del vetro (quarzo, feldspati, carbonati di sodio, potassio, calcio, magnesio, bario, stronzio, di ossidi di zinco, litio, allumina, piombo, di materiali borici quali colemanite, borace, acido borico). Può contenere componenti opacizzanti (ZrSiO4, TiO2, SnO2, Ce2O3 ) o pigmenti ceramici coloranti, risultando dopo cottura nei forni ceramici, bianco o colorato. Le fritte ceramiche si utilizzano tali e quali all’interno della composizione degli ingobbi e smalti ceramici allo scopo di regolare la fusibilità di questi materiali e le proprietà tecniche ed estetiche. Le fritte ceramiche sono comunemente fornite in big bag o sacchetti.
Graniglie ceramiche. Si ottengono per macinazione (comunemente tramite cilindri di acciaio o mulini a biglie di allumina sinterizzata) e successiva vagliatura, delle fritte di vetro: si possono avere diverse granulometrie o miscele di queste, da qualche mm di dimensione del grano di vetro a poche decine di micron. Le graniglie possono essere utilizzate da sole, in miscela con altre graniglie, in combinazione con smalti ceramici, per conferire al manufatto ceramico determinate proprietà tecniche ed estetiche quali: impermeabilità, resistenza chimica e meccanica, trasparenza. In forma solida sono applicate con i granigliatori a nastro, mentre impastate con acqua e sospensivanti o miscelate con smalti liquidi sono applicati con airless, vele o campane. Le graniglie hanno generalmente una colorazione grigio-bianca nelle granulometrie più fini e polverose, mentre tendono a conservare la colorazione della fritta da cui derivano nelle pezzature maggiori. Le graniglie neutre di vetro si possono anche rivestire di un sottile strato di pigmento ceramico (tramite opportune resine) per ottenere grani colorati in alternativa alle graniglie di fritte colorate direttamente in fusione. Le graniglie vengono fornite solitamente in big bag o sacchetti ed in alcuni casi in forma fluida miscelate con opportuni sospensivanti liquidi.
